Something that I’ve always been curious about is “why do people read?” I was an avid reader as a teen and didn’t really have many friends that shared the same interest in reading and discussing (books unless you count the Twilight craze of 2008). As I grew older, reading took a backseat and I found myself enjoying other hobbies. I sold most of my books (a decision I regret to this day) and turned to reading fanfiction when I needed to scratch that reading itch. In December of 2022, I saw myself slowly reading again. I made an Instagram account centered around books and reading, bringing back my love and passion for it. In joining an online space created for books and reading, I saw that I wasn’t alone in taking a break which helped me to find a welcoming community who were also looking to share their journey in getting that love back.
So, why do people read? For me, it can be an escape. I like to get lost in the stories that are being told and viewing worlds that aren’t like our own. Books can also offer unique perspectives on other cultures and ethnicities, putting us in the shoes of others. I’ve struggled with depression throughout my life so reading helps me feel a sense of connection and purpose with those around me. I’ve also expanded my vocabulary, especially becoming a Kindle reader as it has a built in dictionary function.
While this is why I read, there are so many different reasons on why someone would read. In the end, reading is an escape but can also leave us a message to think about. Remember, books are political.
